The basis of the book is that when you die, you meet five people who's lives you've had a huge impact on. The story follows an elderly man who dies at a fairground where we has worked for most of his life trying to save the life of a little girl.
I don't want to give away too much of the book and I feel like that would happen if I explained who the five people he goes on to meet are, but I thought they were very cleverly picked and show how you can have such an impact on someone's life, even if you don't realise it.
One little nitpick I have about the book are that the first 4 people he meets are in pretty much chronological order of his life and when he comes into contact with them, but the final person wasn't in order which threw me a little bit. I can understand why it was done, but still irked me slightly.
All in all, I think this was a beautifully written book that I flew through in a few short hours. It really does make you think about how your life and your actions are so entwined with that of everyone around you and can have such an impact without you even realising it.
I enjoyed the book so much I gave it to my mum to read straight after, and she finished it within a day as well!
Have you ever read The Five People You Meet in Heaven? Or any of Mitch Albom's other work? Let me know!
Hi Megan!
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like an interesting read--Heaven fascinates me :)
I like what you said about not knowing who you're impacting as you go about your daily life. It helps put things into perspective and it makes me want to be more conscious of how I interact with people I do and don't know!

I love how so many different people have come up with different explanations of what Heaven would be like! If you're interested in other depictions of it, I love Gabrielle Zevin's Elsewhere - once you go to Heaven, you start ageing in reverse until you're a baby, when you're sent down to Earth again! Would definitely recommend it if you get the chance x
DeleteOoh enjoy! If you do read it, tweet @BloggerBookBuzz with a review! x
ReplyDeleteI've been considering buying this book for a while now, I really love the concept of it as I've always found it interesting that people's lives are so intertwined. Definitely feeling more inclined to have a read of it now - great review!

DeleteI really love the title of this book, and the concept. I should really read it. Just makes me wonder who my life might be intertwined with without me knowing.

It's definitely worth the read - it's one of those books that make you think a little differently after you've read it x
DeleteI fell out of the swing of reading regularly because life became too full for a while. I've picked up a few books recently which just haven't done it for me so I became frustrated and gave up on them. This appeals to me, and as you were able to read it so quickly it may be the perfect way to reignite my love of reading - a short sharp burst of literary goodness (:
ReplyDeleteAhh I know exactly what you mean! One of my favourite ways of getting out of that slump is to reread one of my old favourite books that I KNOW I'll enjoy, and then I remember how much I love reading generally! x
DeleteI've never heard of this book before but it sounds so interesting!x
